Are you planning to buy a rifle scope sooner?

If yes, then you might be in a great dilemma as you have to make a choice between MRAD and MOA. Well, it has always been a difficult choice for any rifleman or hunter to decide which one is better. To understand their differences, it is necessary to know what MRAD and MOA precisely are.

MRAD: What Does It Mean?

MRAD or MIL can also be known as milliradian. This is also known as an angular measurement which is needed to determine the distance to the target.

There are 6.283 radians in a circle, which means 1000 milliradians in a radian. In short, it can be said that there are 6283 milliradians in a circle.

A small alteration in the aim can bring changes to the target. Keep in mind that .1MIL is equal to 10 centimeters.

MOA: What Does It Mean?

MOA is also an angular measurement, known as minutes of angle.

As we already know, in an angle there are 360 degrees. In 1 degree there are 60 minutes meaning in total 21,600 minutes. That equals to 21,600 MOA.

1MOA is 1 inch at 100 yards. For example, if your shots are at 1-inch circle at 100 yards, then it means that you are doing shooting practice at 1 MOA.

Although MRAD and MOA do not have many differences between them, below are some of the points for which people might consider to choose one over the another.

Differences Between MRAD And MOA Scopes

As MRAD has more options than MOA, professionals tend to choose MRAD over MOA. However, that does not mean that MOA is not that much effective.

  • Popularity

People are more inclined to follow the popularity trend. As most of the military prefers MRAD, people feel this is the best choice to buy.

  • Ease of Use and Reliability

One fourth MOA alteration is less complicated to adjust than one-tenth MRAD.

Furthermore, MRAD is a bit easier to use and communicate whereas, MOA is a bit more reliable than MRAD in terms of accuracy. That’s because one-fourth MOA is a tad more precise than one-tenth MRAD.

  • Performance

As they both perform in the same way when it comes down to measuring and ranging, you have to decide which one you should go for based on the availability and your comfort.

For example, if you measure distance in meters/ centimeters, then MRAD should be your choice. But if you envision distance in yards/inches, then perhaps MOA will be the ideal option for you.

You may also make a choice in buying MOA or MRAD scopes, based on the preference of your friends and fellow shooters.

Though MOA and MRAD perform in the same way, modern military shooters favor MRAD reticles over MOA.

The older shooters, who probably have retired, are comfortable in using the MOA system. Well, that is because they are used to the system as they had been using the same scope a long time.

Keep in mind that the most important thing is in matching the turrets and reticles. That’s because both the scopes will provide the same services.
